Group Study ExchangeFri
29th Apl 2 005 at Princes Theatre Clacton
On September 1st, in conjunction with the Rotary
Club of Clacton Jubilee, we welcomed the GSE Team from
South Africa and
Lesotho to Clacton-on-Sea.The team, comprising three females and one male
and led by a Rotarian from District 9320 (geographically as large as
Belgium), had undergone an extremely arduous selection process before
embarking on their four week tour of District 1240. Inevitably most of the
59 clubs in the District want their “bite of the cherry” producing a
hectic and packed programme. With this in mind, we organised a cold buffet
at the Esplanade Hotel – by this time of the trip, the students enthusiasm
for roast beef and Yorkshire pudding was wearing a little thin – followed
by a gentle stroll along the promenade, down the pier and through the
magnificent gardens in glorious sunshine. Ron Tye, from the Jubilee Club
and a true Clactonian, provided interesting anecdotes on the history and
past glories of this famous seaside resort.Sitting in the typical English country garden of one of our
members supping ice cold lagers and cokes, the group commented how much
they had relished the opportunity to “chill out”, relax and have an
informal chat. For our part we enjoyed listening to these talented young
people telling us about their lives and homelands. They proved to be
excellent ambassadors for their countries and showed how beneficial the
Group Study Exchange project is in providing a unique experience for
young persons to travel, learn and make lifelong friendships.
