WHY USE THE SCOUTS?
Rotary has many aims and objects, just two of which are to foster international relations and understanding, and to encourage young people to accept the ideals of community service. The Scouts, amongst others, share similar aims. Explorer Scouts are senior scouts up to the age of 18, but like their younger colleagues work towards badges and awards, two of which are the Queen’s Scout’s Award and the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. There are many activities leading to these awards but one requirement is that they complete a minimum five day and four night residential project in an unfamiliar environment with people who are not known. The project has to be environmental work, activity based, service to others or personal training. Clacton Rotary Club and Scout Leaders have recognised a wonderful opportunity to embrace all of these aims with this thoroughly worthwhile project, which will do much to strengthen the relationship between two local service organisations.
WHEN WILL THE PROJECT TAKE PLACE?
The considerable administrative work, fund raising, planning and purchase of materials, allied to the need to use school holiday time means that the project will not take place until late August 2006.
HOW MUCH WILL THE PROJECT COST?
All costs of travel and subsistence will be met by the individuals participating in the project.
We estimate that the total cost of the project, which needs to be raised by early May, excluding the above will be £7,000.
This breaks down as follows:
Decorating materials £500 Flooring covering £1200 Curtaining £500 Beds £2200 Chairs £550 Desks £400 Bedside tables £300 Other furniture
£550
Total £6200
Cost of decorating / soft furnishing per room - £200 per room Cost of furnishing per room - say £365 per room All the above will be purchased locally in Poland at very reasonable cost. Van hire and tool hire will be contracted in UK + contingency amounts to £7000
HOW WILL THE PROJECT BE FUNDED?
Both the Explorer Scouts and Rotary Club are fund raising with specific events, sponsorship and donations.
